My name is Jon Sojkowski... I am an architect and my passion is African vernacular architecture. I just found out that we received a grant to document Xhosa vernacular architecture starting in early September. It is an incredible and unique project.
I have been working with the Open Heritage organization in South Africa and together we applied for the Golden Shield Heritage Award., funded by The National Heritage Council of the South African government. The NHC describes the award which was created in 2002,
“as a way to acknowledge active citizenship that protects and promotes the country’s heritage. As the name of the awards suggests, these are the people who act as the shields against the obliteration of our cultural and natural heritage. It is important to acknowledge, thank and take pride in people who continuously contribute selflessly to the preservation, interpretation and promotion of South Africa’s rich cultural heritage”
I am very proud to be lead researcher on the project. My team will be traveling throughout the Eastern Cape for 2 weeks. We will stop at villages to interview citizens about vernacular structures and ask permission to take pictures and videos. After field research I will be working with Open Heritage at their office in Cape Town to get the information online and available to the world.
